Handling Pressure
This is a brief article on how Paul Goldschmidt changed his approach at the plate with runners on base last year. Being able to stay calm in big situations is one of the hardest things to accomplish in Baseball. This is an example of what he tries to do. We talk a lot about focussing on the "process" rather than the result to help hitters achieve this.

Go Pro BP
We attached a GoPro to one of the students heads during Batting Practise to analyse what the students were looking for at the pitchers release point. We also wanted to see how much the hitters head moved during the swing and whether the eyes followed the ball to contact. This video gives a pretty good view from the hitters perspective.
Pre BP Routine
Year 9 students were using the "Tee" today to work on their swing path prior to on-field batting practice. Students went through 10 swings at each phase; middle, away, inside, high, walk-through.
During BP we worked on situations, opposite field and ahead in the count whilst taking some video for further analysis.

Hitting Drills
TEE DRILLS
These drills are designed to work on our absolutes (fundamentals). They are specifically designed to focus on individual aspects of our swing. They are only "drills" and are not for games or live hitting.
Click on the drill (link) to view a demonstration!
How to use the Tee
1. REGULAR (Side)
2. REGULAR (Behind)
3. NO STRIDE
4. ONE HAND "Top"
5. ONE HAND "Bottom"
6. HIGH TEE
7. "Happy Gilmore" Side
8. "Happy Gilmore" Front
9. STEP BACK
10. UP & IN
11. CHANGE- UP
12. LUNGE
FRONT SIDE FLIP
This is designed to create a good swing path to the baseball and get a "feel" for what the baseball is doing off the back. It is also great for working on approaches and game situations in a more controlled environment.
1. The person flipping the ball make sure you are back and behind the screen
2. Take a good step forward and try to under-hand flat strikes
3. Hitters emphasis should be driving the ball to the top corners of the cage
DEMO
LIVE BATTING PRACTICE
This can be done on the field or in the cages. The emphasis here is not on technique but on executing approaches or situations.
1. Think about certain counts that you are hitting in (ahead in the count or 2-strike approach)
2. Execute situations- practice game approaches (moving runners, knocking runner in etc)
3. Create a good bat path to the baseball and "feel" for the result, don't "look" for it.
Whenever you get an opportunity to practice take advantage of it and take "QUALITY SWINGS".
You execute in games the way you practice, so create good muscle memory!
