Year 8 Conditioning
The year 8's have started a new conditioning phase in term 4 to develop agility, speed and endurance. Students will be doing various running drills before going to the pool for laps and recovery once a week.
I used an app called #hyperlapse to video some students participating in some running drills.

EARLY WORK
Well done to the baseball students that have been taking advantage of the optional Strength & Conditioning workouts on Tuesday and Thursday mornings before school. It is great to see students motivated to increase all facets of their game. Students have been engaging in various types of work-outs from strength, aerobic and cross-fit.

WOD 21/3/14
Year 8 students finished week 7 off with a speed and agility warm-up. As you can see by the pics students were using the speed ladder and some hurdles to work on quick feet and bounding.
The skill emphasis was on outfield work and drop steps. Students in partners worked on quarterback drills where one S would turn and go, with a partner feeding them the ball on the run.
Throwing to bases- in 3 outfield groups we did a mass fungo session with S's throwing to a separate base. We did not use a cut off, relying on S's to throw on a flat line. If S's overthrew the base they had to do 10 push-ups!
The group worked really well today, getting their footwork correct and taking care of the baseball.
A huge emphasis with youth players is on minimising the BIG inning. We can do this by catching the ball and getting it into bases quickly.

WOD
The year 8's completed a Triathlon today as part of their strength & conditioning program. Todays focus was on aerobic endurance as students were required to complete a 1.5km run, 10min bike ride (or other aerobic activity in gym) and a 200m swim. All students now have a time in which they can set to improve on. It was a warm day and students had varying degrees of success, but to their credit they all finished!
An enjoyable cool down stretch in the pool was welcomed.
1st place- T.H 21.20
2nd place- C.K 22.30
3rd place- A.B 23.20

BWA- Perth Heat S&C Programs
Baseball WA
This is a link to Baseball WA's Strength & Conditioning exercises. We will be using some of these exercises, particularly the band exercise as part of our Injury Prevention and Strength Programs. Owen Reid is the coordinator who runs the State Junior Teams S&C. It would be a good idea to familiarise yourselves with these fundamentals.
