OZZIE GUILLEN WORKSHOP

I had the unique opportunity of being involved in an on-field work out with Ozzie Guillen on Monday. Ozzie and his son (who played AAA for the White Sox) performed an instructional session for some of WA's talented positional players.
During the session specific areas were covered including; infield work, base-running, bunting and hitting.
Some of the key concepts that were reinforced on the day, which I believe to be valuable  are;

  • FUNNEL, FUNNEL, FUNNEL- when fielding and throwing, the ball comes through your chest before you set your feet to throw. This keeps you balanced and in time
  • SLOW the game down! Use your feet and get into a good position, allowing yourself to be in control. If we rush and try to be quick we are more likely to make error.
  • Set yourself GOALS
  • Have DISCIPLINE
  • BELIEVE in your ability
  • NEVER take your at bats into the field & visa versa
  • HITTING- keep your head quiet and track the ball, this will keep you balanced & provide consistency
  • When taking a lead be ready to take the NEXT base, don't focus on the base you already have!
